Green Moves | How Hermanus Country Market and Mangura Recycling Are Changing the Game

Meet Akhona Dumezweni | Assisting Hermanus Country Market with Recycling!

Hermanus Country Market partners with Mangura Recycling Services to reduce waste! Discover how we're supporting local talent and going green together.

Hermanus Country Market: Putting the Planet First with our Recycling Programme

At the Hermanus Country Market, we believe that caring for our environment goes hand-in-hand with supporting local businesses. We’re more than just a shopping destination – we’re a community that cares, learns, and grows together. Our environmental responsibility is a cornerstone of our ethos, and we’re always looking for ways to go greener, reduce waste, and support sustainable practices.

Our Commitment to Reducing Waste: We’ve taken steps to make sure we’re leaving the smallest possible footprint.

  • First off, no single-use plastics here! Our vendors know the drill: packaging must be either biodegradable, recyclable, or compostable.
  • We’re all about keeping it clean, green, and responsible, so we’ve set a target to recycle at least 70% of our waste. To make that goal achievable, you’ll find recycling and general waste bins throughout the market.
  • We encourage our visitors to join in—bring your own bags, baskets, and even your favourite mugs or glasses for that coffee or fresh juice!

Working with Local Changemakers: We’re thrilled to introduce Akhona Dumezweni, a driven young entrepreneur from Zwelihle and owner of Mangura Recycling Services.

With our collaboration, Akhona and his team help ensure our waste is sorted, managed, and disposed of in a responsible way.

  • We’ve set up dedicated refuse bins with compartments for Wet Waste (food and containers) as well as separate recycling bins for plastic, glass, tins, and paper.
  • Now, each Saturday, Akhona and his team are here to collect and process these recyclables – keeping our market clean and sustainable for everyone.

Supporting Akhona isn’t just about waste management. It’s about backing young, local talent and fostering entrepreneurship right here in our community. At Hermanus Country Market, we’re excited to walk this journey with him and see Mangura Recycling Services grow, one bin at a time!

Akhona’s Inspiring Journey: As Akhona puts it, “Inspired by my friend, Kenny Ngwira, the process of starting this business is like raising a baby – teething problems, learning as you go, but grateful for all the support and good things in life and that I am able to provide a service, and employ local like-minded individuals.”

We admire Akhona’s commitment to learning and his dedication to making a positive impact, and we’re proud to play a part in his story.

So next time you’re visiting the market, look out for our new bins, bring your reusable bags and mugs, and know that together, we’re making a difference. Here’s to keeping Hermanus beautiful, sustainable, and community-driven!

If any businesses, schools, or organizations need help with recycling, Akhona’s your guy! Contact him at +27 81 344 2055 to find out more.
